Meet our Director

TYfC Taunton Stories

Introduction

I’m Kelly, and I have the privilege of leading Taunton Youth for Christ as Director. I grew up in Taunton, so this town—and its young people—mean a lot to me. I’m passionate about helping young people realise their potential and believe that with the right support and opportunities, they can thrive and shape a better future.

Since stepping into this role in August 2022, it’s been a joy to lead a team that’s committed to bringing encouragement, support, and lasting change to young people across the town. At the heart of our work is a belief that every young person matters and has something unique and valuable to offer the world. When I’m not working, I’m usually hunting for great coffee spots or out walking with my very fluffy (and very spoiled!) Cavapoo, Nala, who keeps life fun and energetic.

What made you want to take the role?

Stepping into this role felt like the right next step—not just professionally, but personally. I had a strong sense that this was where I was meant to be. My background has always involved supporting young people, especially those facing real challenges, and I’ve seen first hand how much of a difference genuine care, consistency, and belief in them can make.

I also felt a deep prompting—what I’d describe as a calling from God—to invest even more intentionally in the lives of young people in Taunton. It was a mix of conviction, passion, and timing that made it clear this was more than just a job opportunity—it was something I was meant to step into.

Part of that comes from my own story. I was that young person in need. I know what it’s like to feel lost, to crave support, and to have someone believe in you when things feel uncertain. I also know the impact it had when someone stepped in, saw potential in me, and helped me find my way. That experience underpins why I do what I do. It’s the driving force behind my passion—to make sure no young person is left unseen, unsupported, or without hope.

What do you enjoy most?

What I enjoy the most is the privilege of being invited into the real, often messy, and beautifully complex lives of young people. There’s something incredibly humbling about gaining their trust—especially when you know it’s not given lightly. Watching a young person begin to believe in themselves, take small steps forward, or open up for the first time is something I never take for granted. There’s something really special about being a consistent presence—someone they know will show up, listen, and believe in them even when they’re struggling to believe in themselves. Seeing a young person go from closed off and guarded to beginning to trust, hope, and believe what God says about them is truly beautiful… that never gets old.

Of course, working with teenagers also means surviving endless conversations about obscure YouTubers, being roasted for your music taste (and apparently your fashion choices), and pretending to understand TikTok references you absolutely do not. But I wouldn’t change it for the world! That’s part of the joy. Their honesty, humour, and resilience inspire me daily—and make this work deeply rewarding, even on the chaotic days. I love walking alongside them, cheering them on, and reminding them that they matter—especially on the days when they don’t feel it.

That’s what makes it all worth it.
